Greater LEX Ranks as a Top City for Work, Life and Mental Health Balance

CoworkingCafe released its third annual ranking of the Best U.S. Cities for Work, Life and Mental Health Balance, analyzing 100 major cities across metrics like work hours, remote flexibility, commute times, healthcare access, affordability, green space and more.
According to the study, Kentucky continues to climb in the national work-life balance rankings, with Lexington rising from #11 to #9.

Here’s how Lexington performed in 2025:
  • The city moved up from #11 to #9 nationally for overall work-life and mental health balance, with a total score of 74.8 out of 100. 

  • Lexington ranks #12 for affordability, with a median household income of $67,631 (up from $66,087 in 2024) and a cost of living index of 91.8 (#12), well below the national average. 

  • Commute times are a strong point, averaging just 20.8 minutes, making Lexington the 13th fastest city for daily travel. 

  • It ranks #17 nationally for mental health, driven by: 

  • An air quality score of 40(#5), an improvement from 45.8 in 2024 
  • An average workweek of 37.9 hours (#24)
