Kentucky employs 65,000 tech workers, a number expected to grow by nearly 12% between 2020 and 2030. In fact, the Greater LEX region is a hub for tech job growth in the state, home to companies like Space Tango, a pioneering health & technology manufacturer that originated in Lexington in 2014. With several products deployed on the International Space Station for research and development, Space Tango has firmly established itself as a leader in space-based innovation.

Laser printer and imaging solutions provider Lexmark has also been headquartered on New Circle Road in Greater LEX since 2016. The company employs 1,300, supporting careers in software solutions, data engineering, cybersecurity and more. Joining the ranks of influential tech employers in Greater LEX is Funai Microfluidics Solutions, a global thermal inkjet technology firm, which announced its expansion in Lexington in 2023. In Frankfort, McAllen Solutions is a trusted IT service provider, while Nicholasville’s Badger Technologies is bringing automation solutions and robotics to create end-to-end retail solutions.

Amidst this backdrop of innovation, software startups like Xooker and Fooji are making waves with their digital solutions aimed at fostering brand loyalty in the modern era. With a diverse range of companies driving technological advancements across various sectors, Greater LEX continues to carve out its niche as a dynamic and forward-thinking tech destination.

From Roots to STEM

Greater LEX’s tech industry is not only thriving, but also actively fostering opportunities for learning, from K-12 to higher education. Toyota, one of the region’s most prominent auto tech companies, recently announced it would award grants of up to $5.7 million to prepare students in Fayette County for future science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers. Meanwhile, Institutions like Bluegrass Community & Technical College and the University of Kentucky Department of Technology offer innovative programs that allow students to pursue degrees in Lean Systems Engineering Technology or Computer Engineering Technology.

Awesome Inc., Greater LEX’s innovation hub, also plays a vital role in providing accessible upskilling opportunities in Greater LEX. Through its 16-week coding bootcamp, the startup community caters to individuals at various stages of their careers, from beginners to seasoned professionals looking to transition into the tech field. Additionally, Code: Kentucky, a statewide initiative, is democratizing access to coding education by offering free, mentored training to qualified individuals. The program has helped hundreds develop in-demand skills with little to no interruption to their current employment — empowering learners to embark on a new career in tech within three to six months.
